Le faʻafanua
Rājmahal stands on the southern bank of the Ganges in northeastern Jharkhand, where the river swings past the edge of the Rajmahal Hills. On a map the Ganges is enormous, a wide band of water and sandbanks that shifts over time, and the town appears as a compact cluster of streets pressed along its bank with higher ground rising behind.
The hills give the area its name and a distinctive geology, formed from ancient volcanic rock. On the poster they show up as open space where roads thin out and curve around rising slopes. Between the hills and the river, the town's lanes run roughly parallel to the bank, with a few routes leading inland toward the surrounding villages.
In the late sixteenth century Rājmahal served as the capital of Bengal under the Mughals, and ruins from that period remain in and around the town. A Rājmahal map poster frames that setting: a riverside settlement caught between a great river and a line of hills, with the Ganges taking up much of the composition.
A wide stretch of river with shifting sandbanks runs along the town's edge, filling a large part of the poster with broad, flowing shapes.
Hills rise just behind the town, formed from ancient volcanic rock. Roads curve around them, leaving open spaces on the map where the ground climbs.
The town's lanes follow the line of the bank in a narrow band, a shape set by the need to stay close to the river.

Aisea Rājmahal
Rājmahal carries centuries of history on a modest footprint, and a map of it suits anyone with roots in the Santhal Pargana region or an interest in the Mughal past of Bengal. It is a thoughtful gift for family members who have moved away.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a family name or a date, then choose Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The river's breadth stands out particularly well in Blueprint.
