A rugged volcanic island of deep ravines and knife-edge ridges, its roads clinging to valleys that fall steeply to the Atlantic.

Le faʻafanua
Santo Antão is the westernmost island of Cabo Verde and one of its most mountainous. Seen from above, its interior is a maze of ridges and gorges cut by seasonal streams, with the high plateau and old crater of Cova near the middle. The coastline is steep and mostly unbroken, and settlements tend to sit at the mouths of valleys where the land finally meets the sea.
Most visitors arrive by ferry from Mindelo on São Vicente, landing at Porto Novo on the southeast coast. From there, roads cross the mountains toward Ribeira Grande and the green Paul valley in the northeast, where terraced fields climb the slopes. The island is best known for walking, with a network of old stone paths linking villages across the ridges and down into the valleys.
A Santo Antão map poster captures the contrast between a drier south and a greener, deeply folded north. Roads twist in tight loops to get anywhere, and the pattern of valleys reads almost like the veins of a leaf. It is a detailed, energetic map, well suited to anyone who has hiked the island or crossed it on the winding mountain road.
The ferry port on the southeast coast is the island's gateway from São Vicente. Its small grid of streets sits on a relatively flat stretch of shore, a contrast to the steep terrain behind it.
Around Ribeira Grande and Paul, deep valleys open onto the sea. Settlements and roads follow the valley floors, creating narrow threads of detail between the ridges on the poster.
A winding road crosses the island's high interior, linking the south coast with the north. On the map its switchbacks stand out clearly against the open, largely uninhabited uplands.

Aisea Santo Antão
Santo Antão leaves a strong impression on those who have walked its trails or grown up in its valleys, and it holds a particular place for the Cabo Verdean diaspora. The poster turns that landscape into a clean graphic that still suggests the drama of the mountains.
