Le faʻafanua
Vedaraniyam, also written Vedaranyam, lies near the south-eastern corner of the Kaveri delta in Tamil Nadu, where the coast turns sharply west toward Point Calimere. The Vedaranyeswarar temple stands at the heart of the town, and the older streets arrange themselves around it. Beyond them the map opens into flat, watery country of salt pans, canals, mangroves and shallow lagoons.
The town holds a lasting place in India's independence movement. In 1930 C. Rajagopalachari led a salt march from Tiruchirappalli to Vedaranyam, echoing Gandhi's march to Dandi, and volunteers made salt on the shore in defiance of British law. Salt production still defines the landscape, with rectangular evaporation pans spread across the coastal flats.
Nearby Point Calimere, also called Kodiakkarai, is a protected sanctuary known for flamingos and other migratory wading birds. A Vedaraniyam map poster brings all of this into a single frame: the temple streets, the grid of salt pans, and the fragile coastline dissolving into wetland. It is a quiet image of a place where history and geography meet very directly.
The old town is organised around the Vedaranyeswarar temple, with streets arranged close to its walls in the manner of many Tamil temple towns.
Evaporation pans form a regular grid of rectangles across the flat coastal land, a pattern linked to both local industry and the 1930 salt march.
To the south the coast bends toward Kodiakkarai, a headland of wetlands, lagoons and scrub protected as a sanctuary for birds and wildlife.
