Ergani is in Diyarbakır Province in southeastern Turkey, on the road north toward Elazığ. It lies where the Mesopotamian plain begins to rise into the Taurus uplands, and the map shows it: streets climb and bend with the slope, and the ground behind the town steepens into a mountain ridge.
Above the town stands a mountain known locally for a shrine associated with the prophet Zülkifl, a place of pilgrimage for visitors from across the region. The wider district has a long mining history, and roads link Ergani to nearby valleys where copper has been worked for centuries.
