Pingtan is a town in western Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country on the eastern side of the Sichuan Basin. In this part of China, towns rarely sit on flat ground, and on a map Pingtan's streets bend with the terrain, gathering where the land allows and following the valleys between low, rounded hills.
Around the built-up area, the landscape is typical of the region: small fields and terraces, scattered farmhouses, ponds and narrow country roads linking the town to neighbouring villages.
