Yangcheng lies within Chongqing municipality in southwest China, where the land is rarely flat. In the hills and river valleys of this region the terrain decides the city's shape. From above you see streets that follow contours instead of a grid, neighbourhoods squeezed onto whatever level ground the river bends allow, and bridges that connect districts the water would otherwise keep apart.
The map is a study in constraint. Main roads run along the valley floors and riverbanks, while smaller streets climb in loops and switchbacks up the slopes. Stretches of hillside remain unbuilt, showing up as open spaces between the built-up areas. A Yangcheng map poster shows this broken, many-centred form, which is typical of cities built into the hill country around Chongqing.
The area has grown quickly in recent decades, as has most of the municipality, with newer districts of wide roads and large residential blocks alongside older, tighter streets near the water. On a single sheet the two scales are easy to tell apart. The older fabric looks fine and crowded, and the newer development looks broad and planned, all held together by the lines of the rivers.

Contour-following streets
Instead of a grid, many streets wind along the hillsides. In black and white these curving lines produce a loose, almost topographic pattern that marks this as a hill city.
Bridges between districts
Where the rivers separate neighbourhoods, bridges link them in short straight strokes, pulling the separate parts of the city into one connected network.
