Hem sits on the eastern side of the Lille metropolitan area, pressed between Roubaix to the north and Villeneuve-d'Ascq to the south-west. From above it reads as a patchwork. Terraced brick streets from the industrial era meet later housing estates, and small squares and schoolyards break up the pattern. Towards the edges the blocks thin out into fields and parkland, and the plan loosens there.
Like its neighbours, Hem grew with the textile industry of the Roubaix–Tourcoing area. You can still see that period in the long, narrow plots and straight streets of workers' housing. The town is also known for the Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse, a modest post-war church whose stained-glass walls by Alfred Manessier draw visitors interested in twentieth-century sacred art.
