La Rochelle lies on the Atlantic coast of western France, facing the islands of Ré and Oléron. The old town's heart is the Vieux-Port, a small, nearly enclosed harbour guarded by medieval towers. From there a tight network of streets lined with arcades spreads inland, still bounded in places by the lines of old fortifications.
Around this core, the coast is shaped by harbours of different sizes. To the south, the Port des Minimes is one of the largest marinas on the European Atlantic coast. To the west, the commercial port of La Pallice, and beyond it the long bridge to the Île de Ré stretching across the water.
