Niort is the prefecture of the Deux-Sèvres department in western France. It lies on the Sèvre Niortaise, which winds through the town and gives the map its main curve. The old centre climbs the slopes above the river, with irregular medieval streets, while boulevards and later neighbourhoods spread outward in a looser pattern.
The town's best-known monument is its donjon, a medieval twin-towered keep beside the river. Niort is also known as the base of several major French mutual insurance companies. Downstream, the Sèvre Niortaise flows into the Marais Poitevin, a large wetland of canals and water meadows often called Green Venice.
