Royan sits where the Gironde estuary meets the Atlantic, on the coast of Charente-Maritime. From above, the town is shaped by water. A broad crescent of beach, the Grande Conche, curves in front of the centre, and smaller coves and headlands continue along the shore. The estuary opens wide to the south, and a ferry route crosses it to the Médoc.
Much of central Royan was destroyed by bombing in 1945 and rebuilt in the following years in a bold modernist style. This postwar plan shows on the map as a wide, orderly street pattern behind the seafront. Its best-known landmark is the concrete church of Notre-Dame. Beyond the rebuilt centre, older villa neighbourhoods and pine woods stretch along the coast.
