Abim is the main town of Abim District, in the Karamoja subregion of northeastern Uganda. The country around it is open savanna and dry plains, with hills rising in the distance. On a map, the town forms a small, loose cluster of streets where several rural roads meet, with homesteads and fields scattered in all directions beyond its edge.
As the district headquarters, Abim is where local administration, health services, schools and markets are based, so it plays a role much larger than its size would suggest. The roads leading out of town connect it to the villages and neighbouring districts of Karamoja and to the Acholi region to the west. Most of the land around it is used for farming and grazing.
