Akbou stands in the Soummam valley in the Béjaïa province of Kabylie. That valley shapes everything the map shows. The river, the railway and the main roads all follow the same northeast-to-southwest line, so the town stretches along the valley floor. Where the ground starts to rise, the streets climb and fold into the slopes.
From above, the contrast is striking. The flat, open valley bottom is laid out in fields and newer districts. Around it, mountain villages cling to ridges, reached by winding roads that loop back on themselves. Akbou is the working centre of this middle stretch of the valley, and the town is well known across Algeria for its food-processing and dairy industries.
