Alfter is less a single town than a string of former villages, among them Alfter itself, Oedekoven, Gielsdorf, Impekoven and Witterschlick, laid along the eastern flank of the Vorgebirge, the low ridge that rises west of Bonn. On a map the settlements appear as separate clusters joined by country roads, with open farmland between them and the denser street pattern of Bonn pushing up against the municipality's eastern boundary.
The land between the villages is what defines the area. The Vorgebirge has long been a market-garden district, and its fields of vegetables and fruit show up as broad pale rectangles on a monochrome print, crossed by field paths and the occasional orchard. Toward the south the farmland gives way to the Kottenforst, a large woodland whose straight forest rides cut clean lines through the trees.
