Arris is a town in Batna province in northeastern Algeria, set among the Aurès mountains. Its map is shaped by the terrain: the built-up area follows a valley between high ridges, so streets stretch along the valley floor and climb its sides rather than spreading out evenly. Roads wind in and out of the town, following the contours of the mountains around it.
The Aurès is the heartland of the Chaoui Berber people, and Arris is one of its best-known towns. The region holds a special place in Algerian history as one of the areas where the war of independence began in November 1954, and that history is still closely associated with the mountains around the town.
