Aşkale lies on the high plateau of eastern Anatolia, west of Erzurum, at an altitude of roughly 1,600 metres. The town sits in the valley of the Karasu, one of the headwaters of the Euphrates. The valley floor is flat and open, and the mountains rise on either side.
The valley forms a natural corridor, and the map shows it clearly. The river, the main road and the railway line toward Erzurum all run through the same strip of land, sometimes side by side. The town's streets spread out around them, and beyond the edges lie open fields and bare slopes.

The highway and the railway both follow the valley toward Erzurum. Their long parallel lines cut across the map and emphasise the town's position on an old route.
