Bama lies in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, southeast of Maiduguri, on the flat plains that stretch toward the Lake Chad basin. From above, the town forms a compact cluster of streets and compounds on open ground, with roads leading out toward Maiduguri and toward the Cameroon border. The surrounding landscape is dry savanna, with seasonal watercourses and scattered farmland.
Bama is one of the larger towns in Borno and has long served as a local centre for trade and farming in the surrounding area.
