Maiduguri is the capital of Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria and the largest city in the region. It took its modern form in the early twentieth century, when the colonial administration set up a new centre at Yerwa, and both names still describe parts of the same city. The terrain is almost perfectly flat, so the street network spreads outward with no hills or major rivers in the way.
On a Maiduguri map poster, main roads radiate from the centre towards the towns of the region, and dense residential quarters fill the spaces between them in fine, irregular textures. The seasonal Ngadda river traces a thin line through the urban area and is dry for much of the year. Larger blocks mark institutions such as the University of Maiduguri and the airport.
For centuries this part of the Lake Chad basin was the heartland of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, and the Shehu of Borno, the traditional ruler, keeps his palace in the city. The Ngadda watercourse
A seasonal river winds through the city as a narrow, meandering line. It is one of the few natural features that interrupt the otherwise flat, continuous street pattern.
Dense old quarters
