Maroua is the capital of Cameroon's Far North region, and from above it reads as a low, wide town laid out across the Sudano-Sahelian plain. Seasonal rivers, known locally as mayos, cut sandy channels through the urban area, and the street network bends around them rather than following a strict grid. Beyond the outer neighbourhoods, fields and dry scrub take over.
The city is known across the region for its crafts, particularly leatherwork, weaving and market trade, and it serves as the main gateway to the far north of the country. Waza National Park lies further north, and the Mandara Mountains shape the horizon to the west. On paper, these surroundings appear as open space framing a denser centre.
