Bendorf lies on the right bank of the Rhine just downstream from Koblenz, where the river valley widens before the hills of the Westerwald. On the map, a band of industry and transport runs along the water, the town centre climbs the slope behind it, and forest covers the higher ground to the north and east.
The district of Sayn sits in a narrow side valley that opens toward the Rhine. Its streets follow the valley floor below the ruins of Sayn castle and the later palace. Elsewhere in Bendorf, streets climb in terraces and switchbacks, which gives the upper town a layered, contour-shaped texture.
