Bolenge sits on the bank of the Congo River in Équateur province, a short distance south of Mbandaka and almost exactly on the line of the equator. From above, the water is the main feature. The wide channel of the river, with its long islands and sandbars, takes up much of the frame, and the settlement stretches along its edge in a thin band of streets and plots.
Away from the river, the pattern loosens. Straight tracks lead inland past compounds and gardens, and the paths turn into patches of forest and wetland that show up as open space on a monochrome print. The place has long been known for its Protestant mission station, one of the older ones on this stretch of the river. It gives a quiet settlement a longer story than its size suggests.
