Cheraga lies on the Sahel, the band of low hills west of Algiers between the Mediterranean coast and the Mitidja plain, a few kilometres inland from the sea. From above, an older centre with winding hill roads sits beside large new residential districts laid out in blocks. This reflects decades of growth as the capital has spread westward.
The commune was once farmland, with vineyards and fields, and is now closely tied to Algiers. Main roads link it to the city centre and to neighbouring communes such as Dely Ibrahim and Staouéli. On a map, dense new neighbourhoods sit alongside wide roads and pockets of open ground.
