Cherchell lies on the Algerian coast west of Tipaza, where a narrow strip of flat land runs between the Mediterranean and the green hills of the interior. The town gathers around a compact harbour. From there its streets run inland in a fairly regular pattern before climbing the slopes behind.
Beneath the modern town lies ancient Iol, renamed Caesarea by Juba II when he made it the capital of his Mauretanian kingdom around the turn of the common era. Traces of the Roman city survive among the streets, and the local museum holds sculpture found here. The map itself shows the continuity: a port, a central grid and a coastline that has drawn settlers for more than two thousand years.
