Corato lies inland from the Adriatic in the province of Bari, on the gentle rise towards the Murge plateau. From above, its most distinctive feature is the old centre: a compact, roughly circular core of tight streets, wrapped by a ring road that follows the line of the former walls. Newer neighbourhoods spread outward in straighter blocks beyond it.
The town is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, and olive oil is central to its economy and identity. Like many Apulian agricultural towns, it grew as a dense settlement surrounded by open farmland rather than scattered farmhouses, which gives the map a clear edge between town and countryside. Roads radiate towards Andria, Ruvo and the coast.
