Doba is the capital of Logone Oriental province in southern Chad, set on flat savanna close to the Pendé river. From above it is a low, spread-out town whose streets form loose blocks of compounds that fade gradually into fields and scrub. The river, with its wide floodable margins, is the strongest natural line on the map.
The town's name is known internationally through the Doba Basin, the oil-producing area in the surrounding region. Its crude is exported through a pipeline across Cameroon to the Atlantic coast. The town itself remains an administrative and market centre for a largely agricultural province, and its plan reflects that: a few main roads, a central area and wide residential districts.
