Douéra lies southwest of central Algiers, within the wilaya of Algiers, on the low hills known as the Sahel that separate the capital's coast from the wide Mitidja plain further south. The town has grown steadily as part of the metropolitan area while keeping a centre of its own.
From above, its streets follow the shape of the ground, running along ridges and curving around slopes rather than forming a strict grid. Newer housing districts and roads extend outward, and between them remain patches of agricultural land and orchards that recall the town's farming past.
