Ełk is the largest town in the Masurian part of northeastern Poland and sits on the shore of Lake Ełk, a long, narrow lake that shapes the whole plan. The Ełk River runs through town and into the lake. On the map, streets gather between the water and the railway, with the lakeside promenade forming a long curved edge to the centre.
Just off the shore stands the castle, built by the Teutonic Order and set on a small island reached by a bridge. From above it is a tiny, distinct shape in the water, one of the most memorable details on the map. Ełk is also known for its narrow-gauge railway, a heritage line that still carries passengers into the countryside.
