Giovinazzo sits on the Adriatic coast of Apulia, a short distance north of Bari. Its map is defined by the sea. The old town occupies a small promontory with the harbour tucked beside it, and the coast on either side is low and rocky, drawn as a finely broken line instead of a smooth curve of sand.
The centro storico keeps the tight, irregular plan of a medieval Apulian port, with narrow lanes that turn and fork inside the line of the old walls. The cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta stands near the water, its Romanesque bulk one of the landmarks of the seafront. Outside the old quarter, newer districts spread inland in a much more regular grid.
Beyond the town, olive groves and orchards cover the land, crossed by the railway and the main roads that run parallel to the coast between Bari and the towns to the north.
