Göksun sits high in the interior of Kahramanmaraş province, on an upland basin well above the lowland plains to the south. From above, the town reads as a tight cluster of streets surrounded by broad, lightly marked terrain: fields, pasture and the long folds of the surrounding mountains. The contrast between the dense centre and the open land around it gives the map a clear, simple silhouette.
The town takes its name from the Göksu, a stream that runs through the district and feeds into the wider river systems of southern Turkey. On a Göksun map poster the watercourse is one of the few curving lines in an otherwise compact street pattern, and it helps anchor the town within the plateau. Roads leave the centre in several directions, tracing routes toward neighbouring valleys and towns.
Winters here are long and cold for the latitude, a consequence of the altitude, and the landscape around the town is largely agricultural.
