Helsingør sits at the northeastern tip of Zealand, where the Øresund narrows to about four kilometres and Sweden is clearly visible across the water. On a map the town wraps around its harbour. Kronborg Castle stands inside a star-shaped fortress on the headland, the medieval streets of the old centre lie just behind it, and newer districts spread north and inland.
For centuries, ships passing through the sound paid the Sound Dues here, which made the town wealthy and helps explain the scale of its castle. Kronborg, known around the world as Elsinore in Shakespeare's Hamlet, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beside it, the Maritime Museum of Denmark was built underground around an old dry dock.

The narrow sound
The Øresund narrows to a few kilometres here, and the shoreline facing Sweden forms a clean edge along the eastern side of the map.
