Kėdainiai lies in central Lithuania, on the Nevėžis River north of Kaunas. On the map the river runs through the town in a gentle curve, with the old town on its banks and later districts spreading beyond. The historic centre is compact and irregular, with streets converging on its squares, while the outer areas show the more regular blocks of twentieth-century growth.
In the seventeenth century the town flourished under the Radziwiłł family, who encouraged Protestant settlers including a notable community of Scots merchants. The Great Market Square and Old Market Square, the Scottish merchants' houses and churches of several denominations reflect that period. Today the town is also known for its cucumber festival held each summer.
