Kitakata lies at the northern end of the Aizu Basin in western Fukushima Prefecture. It is known across Japan for two things: its thick-walled kura storehouses, thousands of which stand throughout the town and surrounding villages, and Kitakata ramen, a soy-based noodle soup considered one of the country's great regional styles.
From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by flat rice fields, with mountains rising around the edge of the basin. The railway runs along one side of the centre, rivers cross the plain from the northern hills, and villages sit scattered among the paddies like small islands.
