Konongo lies in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, east of Kumasi, on the main road that runs toward Accra. From above, the town stretches along this highway, and side streets branch off into neighbourhoods that climb the surrounding slopes. The land is green and hilly, and the settlement follows the terrain instead of fitting into a strict grid.
Gold mining shaped Konongo's history. The town grew around mining activity that goes back to the colonial period, and it is still associated with gold today. On a map, the mining legacy appears less as a single landmark and more as the reason the town developed where it did, in rolling country with the road as its lifeline.
