Koppal is the headquarters of its district in northern Karnataka. It sits in the dry Deccan country, where boulder-strewn hills come up out of flat farmland. On a map the town looks tight and irregular. Older lanes cluster around the market areas, and newer roads run outward toward the fields. Rocky ridges push in close to the built-up edge, so blank patches of hillside interrupt the street pattern.
The town has a long past. Emperor Ashoka's minor rock edicts were found on the hills near Koppal, and a fort sits on the high ground above the streets. Neither makes much of a mark in linework, but they explain why the town hugs the rock the way it does. The ancient ruins of Hampi lie within a short drive to the south.
