Korem lies in the southern part of Tigray, in the Ethiopian highlands at a high elevation. On a map it is a compact town on the main road that runs north toward Mekelle and south toward Amhara. Its streets are gathered on a stretch of relatively level ground among surrounding ridges and valleys.
In the mid-1980s Korem became widely known as the site of a large relief camp during the Ethiopian famine, and images from there reached audiences around the world. Today it is a local market and administrative town. Lake Hashenge, a highland lake, lies a short distance to the north and is one of the most distinctive landscape features in the area.
