Lamezia Terme is an unusual city to see on a map because it was formed in 1968, when three separate towns merged: Nicastro, Sambiase and Sant'Eufemia Lamezia. The joins still show. Nicastro climbs the hillside with steep, winding streets, Sambiase spreads across the lower slopes, and Sant'Eufemia sits out on the flat plain toward the sea.
The city faces the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia. This is where the Italian peninsula is at its narrowest, with only about thirty kilometres of land between the Tyrrhenian coast and the Ionian Sea. Toward the water the plain holds straight roads, farmland, the railway and the runway of Lamezia Terme airport, the main airport for Calabria.
