Larbaâ lies in the province of Blida in northern Algeria, on the southern edge of the Mitidja, the fertile plain behind Algiers. Behind the town the ground rises steeply into the Atlas foothills, and that meeting of flat farmland and mountain slope is the first thing you notice on the map. Like many place names in the Maghreb, its name refers to a day of the week.
The town centre has a regular street pattern, with larger modern neighbourhoods added around it as the population grew in recent decades. Roads lead out across the plain toward Algiers and neighbouring towns, while smaller lanes climb into the foothills. Around the built-up area, orchards and fields of the Mitidja form a finely divided texture.
