Longcheng is a town in the eastern part of Gansu Province, in the loess country that stretches across this part of northwest China. Settlements here tend to occupy the valley floors, where the land is level and water runs, and from above the town reads as a band of streets following the course of its valley between higher ground on either side.
The surrounding hills are shaped by generations of farming, much of it on terraced slopes. On the map this country appears as open ground crossed by winding minor roads that climb toward villages on the ridges, while the main routes keep to the valleys, linking the town with its neighbours.
