Manurewa lies in the south of Auckland, and its map is a web of suburban streets held between strong linear features. The Southern Motorway and the main railway line run north to south through the area, and the Great South Road threads between them, lined with shops and older commercial blocks.
Away from these corridors the street pattern becomes looser and more curving, with crescents, cul-de-sacs and small parks typical of post-war New Zealand suburbs. To the west the land slopes towards the tidal inlets of the Manukau Harbour, where the neat blocks give way to creeks, mudflats and irregular shoreline.
The Auckland Botanic Gardens are in Manurewa, a large green space on the eastern side that appears on the map as a broad open patch among housing. A Manurewa map poster shows a very local slice of Auckland, recognisable to anyone who has lived on its streets or taken the train through its station.
