Mohyliv-Podilskyy lies on the left bank of the Dniester in Ukraine's Vinnytsia region, and the river decides the shape of the town. On a map the streets fill a curve of the river and climb from the waterfront toward higher ground. Across the water is the Moldovan town of Otaci, connected by a bridge.
The town is named after Ieremia Movilă, the Moldavian ruler associated with its founding around the end of the sixteenth century. For centuries it was a trading crossing on the Dniester, with a large Jewish community. The older, denser streets near the river still show that history, while newer blocks spread inland.
