Molfetta lies on the Adriatic coast of Apulia, north of Bari, and its map is anchored by the sea. The old town occupies a small peninsula pushing out into the water, its narrow lanes packed tightly together. Beside it, the harbour curves around with breakwaters and quays, still home to one of the region's working fishing fleets.
On the shoreline stands the old Cathedral of San Corrado, a Romanesque church whose position right on the water makes it a landmark from both land and sea. Inland from the historic core, the town opens into straighter streets and more regular blocks, extending toward the countryside of olive groves that surrounds much of this stretch of coast.
