Newala lies in the Mtwara Region of southern Tanzania, on the Makonde Plateau. On the map, the town sits along the edge of high ground, where the plateau drops steeply towards the Ruvuma River valley and the border with Mozambique. Its streets are gathered along a few main roads, with smaller lanes and plots spreading out into surrounding farmland.
From the escarpment, wide views open across the valley towards Mozambique, one of the features the town is best known for. The Makonde Plateau is also associated with the Makonde people and their tradition of wood carving, and farming here includes cashew, an important crop in southern Tanzania.
