Nkawkaw lies in Ghana's Eastern Region at the base of the Kwahu Ridge, a long escarpment that rises abruptly above the surrounding forest country. The Accra–Kumasi highway runs through the town and forms a strong axis from above. Market streets and residential neighbourhoods spread on either side of it and gradually climb toward the foot of the slope.
The town is the gateway to the Kwahu plateau. A winding road leaves Nkawkaw and zigzags up the escarpment to Mpraeso, Atibie and the other ridge towns, where the Kwahu Easter celebrations and paragliding festival draw crowds each year. On the map, the straight highway below and the zigzag climb above make a striking contrast.

Road to the plateau
From the town, a road climbs the escarpment in tight bends toward Mpraeso and Atibie. It is one of the most distinctive stretches of road in the region.
