Noto Map Poster
Noto is in southeastern Sicily, a short distance inland from the Ionian coast. The earthquake of 1693 destroyed the old town, and a new Noto was built on a fresh site a few kilometres away. Its planners used a regular layout of long parallel streets across a slope, with churches, palaces and stairways placed along them to create a series of carefully arranged views.
The town is part of the UNESCO-listed Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. The main axis, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, runs east to west past the cathedral, which is approached by a wide flight of steps. The dome collapsed in 1996 and the cathedral was restored and reopened in 2007. The ruins of the old town, Noto Antica, lie in the hills to the north.

The whole centre was laid out after 1693 on a new site. Its unusually regular geometry contrasts with the organic medieval towns elsewhere in Sicily.
