Ogre lies about thirty-five kilometres southeast of Riga, where the Ogre River meets the Daugava. On a map water frames the town on two sides. The broad Daugava runs along the southwest, the narrower Ogre curves through the east, and the streets fill the land between them in a loose, green grid.
In the early twentieth century Ogre was a resort known for its pine forests and clean air, and people from Riga came for summer stays. Much of that forest remains. To the northeast, the wooded ridges known as the Zilie kalni, the Blue Hills, are criss-crossed by walking trails and appear on the map as open, winding paths.
An Ogre map poster brings these elements together. It shows the confluence of the two rivers, the railway and highway running parallel to the Daugava toward Riga, the residential streets and the forested land at the edges.
