Olecko is in the Masurian lake country of north-eastern Poland, close to the Lithuanian and Russian borders. From above, the town is shaped by water. The Lega river flows through it, and two lakes, the larger and the smaller Olecko lakes, press in against the built-up area. This gives the street plan soft, irregular edges rather than a neat outline.
At the centre is the town's most distinctive feature, a very large rectangular square that is often counted among the biggest in Poland. The streets run out from its corners in a regular pattern. The town was founded in the sixteenth century under the German name Marggrabowa, and that planned core still clearly shows in the map.

Lakes at the edge
The Olecko lakes lie right against the town, and their long, narrow shapes cut into the street pattern. They give the composition its largest dark or pale areas, depending on the style you choose.
The Lega river
The Lega threads between the lakes and through the town. It is a thin, winding line that links the water bodies and shows why the settlement grew exactly where it did.
