Overath lies east of Cologne in the Bergisches Land, a hilly, wooded region of North Rhine-Westphalia. The river Agger winds through the municipality, and the town centre and several of its villages grew up along the valley floor. On a map, the settlement is not one compact block but a chain of smaller centres linked by roads that follow the terrain.
That pattern gives the print plenty of movement. Streets bend with the valley, side roads climb into the hills and stop at the edge of the woods, and the river traces a soft curve through the middle. The Bergisches Land has always been a rural hinterland of the Rhineland cities, and many residents now commute toward Cologne.
