Ptuj sits on the left bank of the Drava in northeastern Slovenia and is often described as the oldest recorded town in the country. It grew from the Roman settlement of Poetovio. From above the old town is a tight knot of curving streets pressed between the river and a hill topped by the castle, with newer districts opening out to the north and east.
The Drava is the dominant feature of the map. It runs wide past the town, is crossed by bridges and, to the west, broadens into the reservoir known as Ptuj Lake. The medieval street plan contrasts clearly with the regular blocks and roads of later growth, so the town's layers are easy to read in black and white.

The river runs broad along the southern edge of town. Its bridges link the two banks and give the poster a strong horizontal line.

West of the town the Drava widens into a large reservoir. Its smooth, open outline balances the dense streets of the medieval core.
