Pulheim lies just beyond Cologne's northwestern edge, on the flat, fertile land of the Cologne Lowland. It is less a single town than a group of former villages that were combined into one municipality. The map shows several separate clusters of streets, each with its own centre, set among open fields and connected by roads and a railway line.
The best-known of these is Brauweiler, whose Romanesque abbey, founded in the eleventh century, still stands at the heart of the district. Stommeln, Sinnersdorf and Pulheim itself have their own older cores, surrounded by newer housing estates with curved streets and cul-de-sacs. Motorways run along the edges of the municipality.
