Putatan is a district in the west coast division of Sabah, just south of Kota Kinabalu, the state capital. It was separated from the neighbouring Penampang district in the 2000s. It is now largely a suburban extension of the capital, with a busy main road linking it to the city and the airport nearby.
On the map, Putatan lies on low, flat land between the South China Sea coast and the first rise of hills inland. Rivers and drainage channels cross the plain on their way to the sea. Housing estates, shophouse rows and older villages sit next to one another, so neat new grids appear beside looser, older lanes.
