Ragusa lies in southeastern Sicily on the limestone plateau of the Hyblaean Mountains. It is really two towns: Ragusa Ibla, the older quarter on a narrow ridge, and Ragusa Superiore, the upper town built on higher ground to the west after the earthquake of 1693. On the map the contrast is striking, with Ibla's tangle of curving lanes set against the straighter streets of the newer town.
Both parts were rebuilt in late baroque style, and Ragusa is one of the towns of the Val di Noto listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral of San Giorgio crowns Ibla, while the upper town spreads across a plateau cut by deep ravines. Bridges span the valley of Santa Domenica, and long flights of steps climb between the two quarters.

The upper town
Ragusa Superiore, built after 1693, is laid out on a more regular plan, its straight streets clearly different from the medieval pattern of Ibla.
Bridges over the ravine
Bridges carry roads across the valley of Santa Domenica, the deep cut through the upper town, and appear on the print as short, strong lines over open ground.
